How Durban Port Container Transport Works

Container haulage looks simple from the outside: collect a box, deliver a box. The complexity is entirely in the documentation and the clock.

Imports

The container cannot be collected until it is released. That means customs clearance done, charges settled and the release reflected in the terminal system. Sending a truck before that simply generates waiting time.

Exports

Export containers must reach the stack inside a defined window before the vessel. Arrive too early and the stack may not be open; arrive too late and the box misses the ship. The stack date drives the whole schedule.

Standing time

Terminal and depot queues are routine. Whether waiting time is included in the rate or charged separately should be agreed in writing before the load moves.

Empty returns

After unpacking, the empty has to go back to the nominated depot by a deadline. Missing it triggers demurrage, which is usually more expensive than the transport leg itself.
