How to Transport Lucerne Bales

Lucerne is bulky rather than heavy, which changes almost everything about how it should be moved.

Volume, not mass, fills the vehicle

Bales usually fill the available deck space before the combination reaches its mass limit. Quote on bale count and dimensions, not just tonnage, or the vehicle will be wrongly sized.

Vehicle choice

Superlink tautliners are the usual answer because they protect the bales and allow side loading. Flatdecks are used where bales are craned or stacked high and then netted. Where farm access is tight, a tri-axle may be the only vehicle that can physically get in.

Loading and securing

Bales must be stacked in a stable pattern and strapped. On open decks netting or sheeting is normally required to prevent loss and weather damage.

Farm access and equipment

Confirm the gate width, road surface and whether the farm has a telehandler or loader. A vehicle that cannot reach the stack, or a stack with nothing to load it, is the most common cause of a failed collection.

Export consignments

Lucerne moving to Durban Port for export has to fit the stack deadline, which means the collection date is set by the vessel, not by the farm.
